MEETING OF THE INTERDEPARTMENTAL COMMISSION ON ENSURING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF TURKMENISTAN’S INTERNATIONAL OBLIGATIONS IN THE FIELD OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW

ASHGABAT, February 23 (TDH). Today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan held a regular meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission on Ensuring the Implementation of Turkmenistan's International Obligations in the Field of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, in which participated the representatives of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, ministries and agencies, and public organizations from across the country.

According to the meeting's agenda, were discussed the results of the Interdepartmental Commission's work over the past year and its upcoming tasks for the current year. Sustainable socio-economic development of the country is closely linked to the improvement of the national legal system and the implementation of universally recognized international norms in the country's legislation.

Participants of the Interdepartmental Commission meeting noted that a number of measures were implemented during the reporting period to further democratize the country and strengthen the state's legislative system.

Neutral Turkmenistan advocates for peace and security, as well as the well-being of individuals and citizens. One of the most important areas for the development of international cooperation is a set of legal, organizational, and practical measures to ensure human rights.

During the meeting were discussed the implementation of objectives arising from the international initiatives put forward by the head of state at the plenary session of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, in particular the proposal to declare 2028 the "Year of International Law," which is an important step in strengthening the international legal foundations for peace and cooperation.

Members of the Interdepartmental Commission presented reports on the main areas of upcoming activities aimed at further improvement of the country's legal system and implementation of international obligations, based on the priority of human rights and humanitarian law.

Speakers at the meeting noted the importance of establishing active, effective cooperation with United Nations agencies and representative offices of other international organizations. The Interdepartmental Commission is conducting comprehensive work aimed at fulfilling our country's international human rights obligations. Speakers at the meeting emphasized that the key indicators of the democratic reforms being implemented in the country are the creation of decent conditions for a prosperous life for the population and the guarantee of constitutional rights and freedoms for citizens.

The Program of the President of Turkmenistan for Socio-economic Development in 2022-2028 defines specific strategic and innovative objectives for organizing decent work for citizens. Innovative labor organization at enterprises of all types of ownership is a key component of the effective implementation of these objectives. Occupational safety and organization of labor is a priority area for improvement. All of this is focused on a scientific and innovative approach to labor organization to ensure the effective realization of citizens' intellectual potential.

In this regard, Turkmenistan is working with the International Labor Organization (ILO) within the framework of multilateral conventions to ensure decent working conditions and protect the rights of all parties in labor relations. In this context, the Roadmap for Cooperation with the ILO provides for the involvement of government agencies and public organizations in the implementation of its outlined activities.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the international community, provide for a range of joint actions for sustainable socio-economic development and environmental protection. They include a set of objectives directly related to human rights, creating opportunities for Turkmenistan to actively partner with UN agencies and other international organizations.

The participants of the meeting of Interdepartmental Commission noted the successful implementation of joint projects with international organizations in areas such as gender equality, maternal and child health, youth policy, digitalization, ecology, and other areas.

Speakers at the meeting noted that important tasks include promoting healthy lifestyle principles among young people and instilling in them a spirit of patriotism, hard work, high moral standards, and civic responsibility.

Participants of the meeting of Interdepartmental Commission discussed the systematic implementation of national plans and comprehensive objectives aimed at developing cooperation with international organizations in the field of humanitarian law. Turkmenistan's responsible approach to fulfilling its international obligations to protect children's rights was also emphasized. A clear example of this is the work of the Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov Charitable Foundation for Assistance to Children in Need of Care, which serves as an important tool for the practical implementation of measures to ensure the well-being of children.

Particular attention was paid to the importance of regularly held seminars, forums, and consultations on the preparation of national reports and reviews in accordance with international UN instruments, as well as the study of best practices in human rights protection.

A number of other issues were also considered at the meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission.
