From July 7 to 16, 2021, The Institute of State, law and democracy of Turkmenistan, together with the UNFPA and the OSCE Center in Ashgabat, organized a series of round tables to review the implementation of the National Action Plan for Gender Equality. Deputies of the Mejlis of Milli Gengesh of Turkmenistan, representatives of hakimliks of velayats and cities, departments of education, health, labor and employment, law enforcement agencies and the bar association, as well as representatives of public organizations – Women’s Union, Trade Unions, and the Youth Organization named after Makhtumkuli.
National experts introduced the audience to various aspects of gender equality, Turkmenistan's international obligations in this area, the Final Recommendations of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, disclosed the priority positions of the National Action Plan for Gender Equality in Turkmenistan for 2021-2025 and, together with the participants, discussed the mechanisms for its implementation and monitoring.
During the discussions, the issues of economic rights and opportunities of women were raised with a focus on vulnerable women living in rural areas, reproductive rights of women and reproductive health, not only for women, but also for men and adolescents, the role of public organizations in promoting gender equality in Turkmenistan. Participants were interested in best practices in involving men and boys in promoting gender equality. During these discussions, the proposals for improving the existing practice in Turkmenistan in this activity were made.
The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations, as well as other relevant government bodies and public organizations.
The implementation of the National Action Plan for Gender Equality contributes to the implementation of measures of state programs related to the improvement of the status of women and men in all spheres of public life, Turkmenistan’s international obligations in the field of gender equality, the “Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework between Turkmenistan and the United Nations for 2021-2025”, country programs of UN agencies for 2021-2025. The plan also helps Turkmenistan achieve the goals and objectives of the global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
