In 2011, Turkmenistan joined the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and since then the country acts as one of its most active parties. The UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. inscribed the “Epic art of Gorogly” (2015), “Kushtdepdi rite of singing and dancing” (2017), “Traditional Turkmen carpet-making art” (2019) and “Craft of making dutar, the performing musical art of playing it and the art of bakhshi” (2022).
On the 30th of November 2016, the multinational nomination of “Nowruz” holiday was considered during the 11th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and was entered into the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Turkmenistan continues active collaboration with UNESCO, in particular on the enrichment of the World Heritage List. This year, on the proposal of Turkmenistan, jointly with friendly countries, the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage inscribed the following elements– “Turkmen-style needlework art”, “Telling tradition of Molla Efendi” and “Sericulture and the traditional production of silk for weaving”. Turkmenistan will continue to expand cooperation with UNESCO.
