Turkmenistan takes part in the 220th session of the UNESCO Executive Board

On 9 October this year, the 220th session of the Executive Board of UNESCO began its work in Paris.

During the event, more than 30 agenda items will be considered, relating to the implementation of decisions and resolutions adopted by the Executive Board and the General Conference at previous sessions, financial, administrative and other issues.

Yesterday, 14 October, the two-day traditional meeting of the National Commissions for UNESCO of the member countries of the organization opened during the regular session of the Executive Board. Turkmenistan is represented by Maksat Charyev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Delegate of Turkmenistan to UNESCO and Chinar Rustamova, Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO.

The plenary session of the meeting featured presentations by Mr. Firmin Edouard Motoko, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Africa and External Relations, Mr. Ernesto Ottone, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Cultural Affairs, and Mrs. Denise Bax, Director of the Communication, Cities and Events Unit in the Culture Sector of UNESCO, Coordinator of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).

The meeting focused on discussing important issues, including the outcomes of the Future Summit, which emphasizes multilateral initiatives and decisions, as well as the enhancement of practices for collaboration among cities included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

During the break of the first day of the regular meeting, the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Paris hosted a luncheon at the UNESCO headquarters building, where the Permanent Representatives, Ambassadors to UNESCO and Secretaries General of the National Commissions for UNESCO of the TURKSOY member countries were invited. During the luncheon, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO briefed those present on the works carried out in Turkmenistan as the presiding country to implement the tasks set during the 10th meeting of the National Commissions for UNESCO of the TURKSOY member countries held in Ashgabat on 16 May this year. She also put forward several proposals on uniting efforts of regional countries on preservation and popularization of ancient heritage monuments and their inclusion on UNESCO lists.

Within the framework of the traditional meeting of the National Commissions for UNESCO, the Turkmen side held meetings with the Secretary of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, Fumiko Ohinata and the Head of the Creative Cities Network Mrs. Denise Bax, where the current issues of interaction and plans for the coming period were discussed.

The regular meeting demonstrated the strong commitment of the National Commissions for UNESCO to contribute to the ongoing process of implementing UNESCO programs and projects, to provide a platform for exchange of views on the role of National Commissions in the strategic transformation of the Organization.

It should be recalled that the work of the Regular Session of the Executive Board of UNESCO will continue until 23 October 2024.
